I just love my four-legged babies. And they are literally like my children. When we got our first puppy, a chocolate lab, nearly nine years ago, she was 8 weeks old. And she missed her mother. The first night, we closed Libby in our bathroom with lots of newspaper, and she cried and cried. I couldn’t bear it. So I went in the bathroom and lay with her on the floor. She was perfectly happy to snuggle in with me and went right off to sleep.
Well, I wasn’t so young anymore, and sleeping on Linoleum didn’t feel too great! So the next night (and basically the next month), I slept on the couch with Libby on my chest. Each time she would start to wiggle, I would take her out to potty. And in about a month, she would sleep through the night.
Sounds kind of like a baby, doesn’t it? 🙂
Well, three years later, I headed to Petsmart with my three kids (mistake number one) to get a guinea pig. And we went on a Saturday (mistake number 2), adoption day. So along came Duke! Instead of a guinea pig, we went home with a new puppy. He’s a spotted mix (a rescue dog, so we have no idea what he is). This time I skipped the bathroom floor and started out on the couch with him on my chest. And again, in about a month, we had a dog well trained and sleeping through the night.
These days, Libby sleeps on the floor all around the house (snoring very loudly!), moving from one bedroom to another, and Duke sleeps on a pillow near our bed. They’re all grown up now, well past the puppy stage, and I’m so glad! I can’t imagine starting out with another “baby”. But then again, someday, I’ll walk back into Petsmart on pet adoption day…

So your basically saying you house trained your dog and taught it to sleep through the night by….making a dog bed out of yourself?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm………….
Somehow to me, this is not a solution.
Oh, but Mary, we're so bonded now! They're both totally devoted to me now–unlike some human children I know.
🙂
Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
Hi Missy, I just lost my lab of 11 years. It was so sad. Broke my heart. But then 3 days later a friend from church had a stray show up on her door and he is now our new pet. 🙂
Congrats on your new book!!! Blessings.
Oh, Kit! I can't even begin to imagine it. We just lost a 13-year-old kitty. And I loved her, too. But my dogs are my babies. I so dread that day.
I'm thrilled you have a new pet, though! God provided.
Your dogs are so cute. The pets I've had always feel like a part of the family. Someday we hope to have a dog, though not as big as yours. Our place is not big enough.
Hi, Missy. What a darling story! Such a lovely way to get your pups comfortable with their new family and home.
Duke looks like he might be part Blue Heeler, with his coloring and spots. Definitely looks like a working dog.
Enjoy….
I lost my beloved 13 year old Cocker Spaniel I got when he was a puppy the same year I lost both of my parents and it was so agonizing.
He was such a part of our family.
This story sure made me smile!! Especially now, because we are babysitting our grandpuppy…who would very much like the wonderful treatment your dogs got when they were newcomers to your family!!
Cynthia, my children (especially by daughter) would love to have a small dog, too. But we're sticking to two right now! (My daughter actually wants a dog she can carry in a dog purse. LOL)
Thanks for stopping by!

Catherine, is that the same as a blue tick hound? I've thought that before. And he acts just like a hunting dog! He chases birds and bunnies like crazy. We just sit and laugh about the birds. He can jump straight up in the air like he has rockets on his feet (about a 4 foot vertical), and he stands at trees and tries so hard to jump up and get a bird! 🙂
Missy
Oh, Magnolia, that just breaks my heart. I'm so sorry.
Do you have another pet now?
Roxanne, don't your human children demand you sleep with their 4-legged children?? What kind of grandma are you??!! 😉
Thanks so much for having me this week! I'll go draw a name for the book right now.
Cynthia, I drew your name as the winner! Congratulations! If you'll email me at missytippens [at] aol.com and give me your mailing address, I'll send a copy of His Forever Love to you.
Missy, I think that Blue Heelers & Bluetick Dogs come from the same lineage. I could be wrong about that. Now you've got me curious! Lol! I'll look into that.
