Charisse Wellman’s husband has been gone a year, and she’s about to lose the only home her son, V.J., has ever known. She’s quit law school but the money just isn’t there. Her only option is to work as a law clerk for her ex-friend, Gideon Tabor. The only problem: Gideon is the judge who let her husband’s killer go free, and Gideon doesn’t know the connection.

Gideon Tabor can’t believe that the woman interviewing for the job is the girl he loved in high school. Charisse is hesitant about accepting his job offer, and when she does, Gideon makes every attempt to apologize for his relationship-ending blunder in high school. Charisse accepts his apology, but she keeps him at a distance. When Gideon learns that Charisse’s anger actually stems from his release of the man who ran down her husband, he tries to explain, but Charisse doesn’t want Gideon’s excuses or the love he has to offer. She wants her husband’s killer to pay.

There are very few of ‘em left. Fay Lamb, the only daughter of a rebel genius father and a hard-working, tow-the-line mom, is not only a fifth-generation Floridian, she has lived her life in Titusville, where her grandmother was born in 1899. Recently, while touring the town’s historical museum, Fay and her husband, Marc, discovered a newspaper clipping in which their great-aunts stood side by side in a 1926 eighth grade class photo. A mural on the historical society’s outer wall depicts three fishermen: one is Fay’s uncle; the other two depict Marc’s great-grandfather and his great-uncle.

Because Marc and Fay both have quirky families, they love to try to tip the scales with stories of the escapades of loved ones, vying for the title of quirkiest family. Marc usually concedes because Fay’s father was too colorful a character. She believes that aside from salvation, God’s greatest gift is that of humor, and she often uses family exploits in her writing. Because she also believes that those who laugh the most often cry the hardest, Fay mimics that truth in her stories by including moments of laughter born from tears.

Since an early age, storytelling has been Fay’s greatest desire. She seeks to create memorable characters that touch her readers’ heart. She says of her writing, “If I can’t laugh or cry at the words written on the pages of my manuscript, the story is not ready for the reader.” Fay writes in various genres, including romance, romantic suspense, and contemporary fiction.

Fay takes the adage “write what you know” seriously and incorporates that truth into all her stories. Many of her characters and her locations are molded from her life experiences and from people and places she has met, has visited, and that have intrigued her. One character can be a mix of three or four true life “characters.” So be careful. Fay loves to create conflict in her stories. She might invite you into one.

My beloved explained to our Goddaughter more than once that men are dense, but in this well-written story there are a couple of folks of different genders with that identical problem. Stand-alone perfect, happy ending but we will see some of the other folks again in other books in the series. Many characters have biblical names, and we are provided with their meanings. All-round excellent storytelling.

I don't read much romantic fiction, but Charisse's pain at the death of her husband and anger at the judge who seemed to trivialize his hit and run death, gripped my attention. Charisse's reactions were real - no cardboard Christian here! She and the judge were close friends in school and Judge Tabor doesn't understand her aloofness. Her son, VJ, needs a man in his life and Charisse can't deny him the love of the judge who has also become her boss. Fay has beautifully integrated spiritual principles and lessons without becoming preachy, and the ending was satisfying without being syrupy. I wanted to vote with the majority for 5 stars, but two issues brought me to a 4. Charisse's character frustrated me with her blindness to the truth of the mystery woman. I wish she had figured out the truth, but then something(s) happen to blind her again. Also the sudden conversion of an unpleasant character seemed too unexpected. I would have expected the character to struggle with her response, perhaps a little earlier in the book. I hope I'm not being too picky, but those two anomalies to the rest of the story, really disturbed me. However, once hooked, I couldn't put Charisse down, and lost sleep every night until the conclusion!

I'm so mad at myself! I started this book at about 11:00 p.m. And it is now 3:20!!!! I could not put the book down! It is one of the best books I have ever read! I am so glad I purchased this! Please keep writing! You are a fabulous author !! I loved the spiritual truths, I loved the romance, I loved the unexpected twist! I would give this book far more than five stars! Great job!

Haven't enjoyed a book like this in a long time. So used to my mysteries & historical romance, I forgot the joys of a real life story & God's role in our lives. Refreshed & uplifted is how this story comes across. Tragedy can lead to true forgiveness & love if we step out of God's way.

I really enjoyed this book. It was such a wonderful story of second chances, love, forgiveness and God's love. As a widow, I could definitely relate to the main character's emotions and her journey in finding God's plan for her life. This was a wonderful read and I definitely look forward to the next book in the series.

I particularly enjoyed this book about a young widow and her 7-year-old son. It opens the reader’s eyes to the emotions and trials of a woman and her child, who are struggling in life to adjust to a new normal. I can’t even imagine how hard that would be, but Charisse is doing it all with grace and depending on God for her strength, even when she is only hanging on by a thread. I think this book shows women how we might choose to act, when/if we come into a similar type of situation, especially in forgiving others who might have harmed us either intentionally or unintentionally. I love the characters. This book is almost a 5, but I thought a couple of things were a little off—one was Gideon’s secret plan and the other had to do with the antagonist. If you like women’s fiction with more than a touch of romance, I think you will enjoy reading Charisse.

Not easy to show or teach, but this novel does both very well. I can recommend this book to anyone struggling with the difficult truths of living in grave and forgiveness

The novel begins with Charisse, a young widow with a son who is still mourning the loss of his father. Charisse, herself is in a bad place, full of anger that her husband's killer was not charged, overwhelmed with financial difficulties and worried that her son is not moving on from his father's death. At wit's end, she applies for a job clerking for a judge. To her dismay the judge is connected to her past and she struggles to find the courage to take the job. As the story plays out, Charisse begins to find happiness again to the point of falling in love, but it's not smooth sailing. He says he is in love with someone else!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book!

I love this book. Charisse and young V.J. come to vivid life through the author’s skilled writing. From the first paragraphs I cared about her predicament and her son’s stark grief. When Judge Gideon Tabor is introduced, it’s easy to picture the football quarterback turned successful lawyer. More handsome than any guy has a right to be, with the bonus of a soft side. The relationship between Charisse, VJ and Gideon tugs at the heart as they struggle through present and past disappointments and dreams. Misunderstandings become huge barriers, as they can in real life. But faith also plays an important role in this story, and that brings hope.
With its well-written, heart-warming message of forgiveness and second chances, Charisse readily earns five stars. Highly recommended.
